Narrow Alleys
Thurber collected several photographs depicting Charter Street, such as this one. Written on the back are the words, "Charter St. at Unity - looks just like the others."
This photo depicts an unknown alley in the North End. Written on the back are the words, "Places like that weren't merely made, but actually grew."
In the early 20th century, the North End underwent several cycles of demolition and reconstruction. This no doubt contributed to Thurber's difficulty in finding Pickman's studio again. In this photo, buildings on an unknown street are in process of demolition.
